Ad council, preventing reckless driving

WHat kind of coalition/cause and effect relationship?

Ad Council's new PSA for preventing youth's reckless driving uses cause-effect strategies in funny way. For example, in one of the PSA, a driver starts texting as he is driving. Another guy who was sitting in the back-seat told the driver that if the driver did not stop texting, he will scream like a crazy. Another PSA shows a driver who driving fast, and another guy started to make the driver uncomfortable by talking about wired horse topic, and told the driver that if he did not slow down, he will smash his head like a apple.

Thus, the each PSA uses the cause and effect relationship of something will happen if the driver did not stop reckless driving because of something. What interesting about this cause-effect relationship is that causes and effect are not really related. For instance, cause of screaming crazy does not directly relates to the effect of stop reckless driving.

I think this Ad was was successful to persuade people to talk about preventing reckless driving. USually preventing reckless driving Ads show the effect of car accidents, more shocking effect. However, this Ad does not show such shocking effect, but it was much more conversational and nothing shocking incident occurred. RAther, watching this Ad was kind of funny and silly, and that is why I think this Ad was successful in terms of let people talk about the issue. It stands out from other usual reckless driving Ads, and catches the audience' attention.

The whole campaign of Ad council has cause and effect relationship as well. The cause of the campaign is young people driving recklessly. The effect is, therefore, we should have campaign.
The another cause and effect is teens and accidents.

Letter to my brother- explaining cause and effect

Dear Brother,
Hi, how are you? I hope you are doing well. It's been while last time we talked and I can't really say what I wanted to say on the phone so I decided to write to you.

I know you still have wondering whether you should quite college or not.
Well I am telling you, you should quite school right now and start something new. Don't hesitate and don't just let things flow. It won't solve anything, but just makes your situation worse and worse.

You have been failing classes, and lost credits. You suppose to be graduating this year same as me, but you are still sophtmore standing. You are pretty much waisting your time and parents' money. The college is place for those who want to learn something, and it is not a paradise which you can do whatever you want without any interuption. If you do not take any action right now, you will just regret later that you should have quite more earlier.

Quite school and I want you to do something new. For example maybe go abroad or traveling. You know traveling by yourself really change your value. You will see the world which you haven't seen before, and you will realize how much small your world were. Right now you don't want to go school because you are thinking about something that you think it is big deal to you. But go outside and look the world. You will know that how small world you were in, and how small things that you are thinking of.

You just need to have one step forward. You just need to have courage to quite school and walk into the world you never seen. Once you do that, everything will come to you with good faith and your future will be blilliant like a shining star!!!

Why Can't Women Ski Jump- WHere the stasis lies in the argument?

In the article "Why Can't Women Ski Jump", Claire raised questions for the situation which Olympic does not offer ski jump for women. She disagree some degree with IOC but in some degree she agrees. And she argues that it is likely impossible to include it.

She shows the unfairness and contradiction of IOC by stating the fact that ski jump are not offered to women although all games are offered both men and women. It is contradiction and discrimination.

However Claire also points out how women's ski jump does not apply to its "technical requirement". Also she described the difficulties and realities in the attempt of including women's ski jumper.

With this association of concepts, she created her conclusion that it is impossible to include women's ski jump in Olympic. This association of concepts and the conclusion is stasis in her essay; the degree of difficulties the women ski jumpers faces in contradiction of IOC's announcement.

Susan- "I will never know why"

At the beginning, her character was Dylan's mom, and she shift it to character as supporter of suicide. I like how she told her story of Dylan and the how the shooting event happened. She talked about how she felt when the event occard, and that makes audience into her story. And also her detailed descriptions make the story interesting, and kind of suspense feeling.

She talked about how she feel sorry for other people who Dylan killed. She put objection that others might blame her being monster parent. She argued it by saying she is also victim of the event. She gave a lot of fact how society, newspaper, radio treated her as monster parents, and saying it was parent's fault that Dylan killed. She said she felt humiliation. I think these things bring audience sympathies with her, even Dylan did bad thing, and could be her fault some part. She is reducing her responsibilities as Dylan's mom by telling how society treated her bad. But still she shows she think that she has some fault.

She talked about Dylan wanted to kill himself, but didn't wanted to tell anybody. That brings her to argue, it is important to notice the signal in people. If she could notice Dylan's signal, she said, she could prevent the trategic event. Therefore, it is important for her to support suicidal prevention organization. This is how she shift her character of preventor of suicide from mom of killer.

Thoughts on: Hook-Up Culture

"Hook-Up Culture" written by Jack Grimes is a writing about a creative work because he analysis the Hook-Up Culture with narrative and story. His main argument about Hook-Up Culture is it is "where is it come from? And is it here to stay"; hook up culture should be gone.

His essay looks like well-developed and could persuade people to think hooking up culture is not good things. However, there are some elements in his essay that is not so compelling to us as persuasive. For example, when he defined Hook-Up Culture at the beginning as "an environment that expects casual sexual encounters that do not necessarily lead to anything further", the question is risen; how about one experienced a hook up and later on it leaded to something meaningful to him/her. All hook up is not meaningless, but there are some case that brings meaningful life. For example, my friend and her boyfriend has been together for almost 4 years and they love each other so much and they are thinking to get married next year. They are now happy, but how they met was hooking up. Thus, hooking up culture can lead something meaningful or happiness in many cases.

Also, he said "a women who embrace hooking up culture is simply making it easier for guys to treat her as a sex objects". I felt this is kind of racist opinion. Behind this argument, he has assumption that man can sees women as sex object whereas women don't. I disagree with this idea. SOme women see men as sex object too. I know a lot of people who just want to have good time with a lot of people, and not be in relationship.

My Valentine's day

For the Valentine's Day, there is nothing better than being anywhere but with someone you love. Saturday early morning, I left for Tacoma airport. Being alone in the dark chilly morning, I was feeling a bit lonely. Having heavy suitcase on my back, with sleepy face and closing eyes, I headed my gate. I was about to fly to FL over the weekend where my boyfriend lives. It was exciting to see him. But till get there, for almost half a day trip was killing me. I arrived at the gate. There are so many people waiting. The boarding time came, however, nobody get in the plane. Soon, there was an announce saying "The flight will be delay due to weather condition...". "Are you serious?" Somebody shouted. People were all looking grumpy and angry. I was too, I wanted to sleep more if I knew the flight will delay. Anyway, I waited because I wanted to see my boyfriend. Next moment, there was other announce again "The gate has changed for the flight 000 to X gate..." Next moment, the people began moving. They rushed into the train. Somebody punched in my face with their suitcase, and somebody stepped on my feet. It was chaos and I got hurt a lot. Totally, I had to spend 12 hours at the airport and in the plane. By the time I arrived Florida, it was passed midnight. I was exchausted and totally forgot about Valentine's day. However, the next 2 days with my boyfriend fully charged. After all tiring chaotic time at the airport and plane, I had sweet Valentine's Day with my boyfriend and it was all what care about.

in class exercise- external proof

Ad Council and GLSEN's addressing teen's use of anti-gay language was great campaign. It is in big scale which have about 33.000 media involved national wide, as well as popular social networking and blog site.

In terms of the website, with vivid color and modern design, it has potential to attract teens. Also with the use of videos and some downloading systems, the website allows the user to interact. Furthermore, the contents of the website are rich in information. This attractive, interactive, and informative features makes the website to communicate well with the users.

One significant point that this campaign was succesful is that the Ad Council and GLSEN are aware of who is their audience. They know who they are targeting for the campaign very well. That is why they used Hilary Duff as the campaign character, knowing her popularity among teen and model leader among them. The website is created in the way to target the teen as well. The structure that are easy to explore the website, the exciting color use and a lot of interactions and interactions. Not only that, but the website contains many solid facts. The use of statistic enhances ethos for campaign.

They are trying to change the atmosphere. Is that effective way to start the conversation? Ad council is giving many different ways to start conversation about the issue by giving different kind of proof. However, it is still intringic to change somebody's everyday life activities, especially, such anti-gay language are used almost unintentionally among teens.

Seattle sports fun? Writing to evaluate

While Seattle has negative reputation for its sports fans, Jerry argued that its virtual image should be re-considered with their real images. His attempt to support the claim- such as uses of facts and quotes, and emotional appeals are seems reasonable, however, fails in terms of degree in persuasion. fails because they are nothing but just an exaggeration, an excuse and consolation.

Jerry drew true image of Seattle sports fans by giving facts and quotes. to overwrite their "quiet fan" stereotype. Having high number of sold tickets, laudest studium and best homecourt; praiseworthly support even teams are in longtime-loose; ---these are the "real" Seattle fans according to Jerry. Although these facts are true, they do not support the claim completely. Nothing is proven that how these facts can prove that they are not boring fans. Even though all the tickets were sold, if people went home before the games over, it is not passionate fans. Even though they made the studium laudest, it could be fans from opposing team. Supporting even though the team keep loosing could be interpreted as bad fans who doesjn't care weather they win or not.

Jerry also draw haw Seattle fans are used to be seen in the past still bothers them today. He pointed out the characteristic of historical Seattle, saying that it represents how others see the fans. I think what he is trying to prove here is too forcible. His reasoning; because the city is old, the people are seen as old too, therefore Seattle fans are seen as quite boring fans, is logical but not valid. For instance, there are many people who does not represent the city. Plus, the example of how L. A. and Chicago fans are seen, could be any fans of any states. How people see the city does not do with how they see the sports fans. There are no connection between these two, since no connectionare proven. Therefore, how people see Seattle sport fan is not perception or city reflection, but shows reality.

Wired rules lies my high school

The high school that I attended was a little bit strange, in good way, was unique. It was Japanese boarding school locates, somehow, in Switzerland. As it was in Switzerland, the teachers were half Japanese and half Americans. The official language was English, although it was ignored because all students are Japanese who doesn't speak English very well. Living in this a little strange place, I found many rules lies in the school.

First, there were some restrictions on which destination you travel to. Locating in the middle of Europe, Switzerland is perfect place to travel to other countries. However, we were not allowed to go to Netherlands for example. We couldn't go to Spain either. Also, every time we travel, we have to write a purpose of the travel, specific dates, flight schedule etc.

What did I think of these rules? Of course when I was high school, I was wondered why we can't go anywhere we want to. We used to live in such a great location, and this was the only time we can travel Europe easily. If we were in Japan, we hardly travel to Europe.

However, this rule is very important in terms of our safety. For example, Netherlands is regal for Mariwana. If we go there, we might get into dangerous situation. Also, what if we missed the plane? Since we don't speak any European language and speak broken English, it will be almost impossible to get another plane tickets, and go back to school. Because school keeps on track where we are, we can go places safely. If something happened to us, the school will help us out. If we got lost, the school will find us. For our safety and the school makes those rules. The school has right to make such rules because it has responsibilities to protect us.

Letter to my brother

Dear Daichi, (my Brother)

It's now year of 2010 and this is your 2nd time you repeated a year. But still, you are not trying to quit school. I know you are worrying how other people and society will judge you if you quit college.

Life in Japanese college is like a heaven. You don't have to go class, and you have seldom homework. You can go party every day and being lazy all weekend. You are part from parents, so nobody is nagging to you. SO you want to stay as a college students forever. Also, you

But you can't do this forever. You can't repeat same year again and again. I think 2010 is the best year for you to make a big change in your life. I really want you to withdraw from school, and go travel around the world. When I was 15 years old, I moved to Switzerland, and have seen around the Europe. There I've met many people from different cultures and values. Every time I see different values and culture, myself were improved. I've also been to poor countries and seen people living under despair. All the experiences I had in traveling around the world make me grow up as a human beings.

Right now, growing up in small town in Japan, your view is very provincial. That's why you care so much about how other people and society will look at you. That's why you cannot take a step forward. If you go out of the country and see the world, you will realize that you are warring about such a small things. You will realize there are more important things than decency, academic background in the world out there.

Exercise #5 Letter to Editor

In her recent article about the Tacoma shooting incident, Sue Rahr argued that community's safety is responsibility of both law enforcement and community's collaboration. I agree with her idea of "new reality" which police and our community are facing. The reality that police officers are in risk, the reality that our community are in unsafe, and the reality that the relationship between police and our community will be intense. As Sue argued, I believe the only way to avoid these realities is to be united and work together. We should fight together against the new realities which is threatening us and our community. As a member of community, we should all understand and support police and protect our community.

Exercise #4 analysis Sue Rahr

In Sue Rahr's article which was a response to the homicide of police officers in Tacoma, she argues how much this incidents hurt police officer and people, but at the same time, she also argued how much people supported police officer. Sue stated that people showed their support for police service by sending letters, flowers, sweets and by "thank you". Sue's article was successful in terms of having commonplace. There are three kinds of commonplace: conjecture, degree, and possibility. In Sue's article, commonplace of conjecture is seen when she talk about what happened in Tacoma and what happened in 9/11. These two events are something happened in the past and also something commonly shared among the audience. Next, commonplace of degree is used when she compared Tacoma incidents and 9/11. She said she feel same way as she felt during 9/11. Also, she connect her feeling for the event with audience's feeling at the end of the article. She told audience to not forget how they felt during 9/11. That feeling is shared commonly among audience. Finally, commonplace of possibility can also be used. Sue talked about how this incidents might damage the relationship between police and people. Her commonplace of possibility is "is it possible to keep the relationship between police and people".

Exercise # 3

The year of 2009 was very fresh and new. It was my first year at SU, and first time to live by myself in Seattle city. It was new school, new people, and new life. However, I also think it was really busy year too. I was driven crazy because of tons of academic work, tutoring, working at collegium, volunteers, and Internship etc. I think the reason I was driven crazy is because I was trying to obtain all the opportunities SU offers. From this experience, I learned that I wasn't doing right time management. So, I think 2010 will be more relaxing. I want to take things slow this year. Of course It's good that you challenge many things. But it is more important to manage your time and your ability. Rather than trying new things, this year of 2010, I want to keep what I have been doing from 2009. However, it is also true that 2010 will be big turing point for me. First I will be graduating, then, I have to get a job, and then going back to Japan. So I in order to graduate and get a job, I still have to work hard. In addition, I want to go India. In 2009, I couldn't really go other countries besides going back to Japan, so after graduate, I hope I can go traveling a lot. I want to go India, Thailand, Mexico, and maybe Asian counties. During school period, there is no time for traveling, so I wish I can go traveling after I graduate. I think traveling is great things to do because you can get to see the world you never seen.

Exercise 1/12

I love coffee. I drink coffee at least one cap a day. Sometimes I drink more than three times a day. My favioret place for coffee is starbucks. I goes sturbucks in the morning, between classes, after classes, and even before going to bed. Starbucks is way better than just going Cstreet and get a cap of coffee. When a staff make a coffee for me, it taste more delicious than the self-made. Also I love the atmosphere of starbucks.
